I’ve been making photographs for three years. To date, I’ve preferred working in black and white. That’s probably because when I was growing up I thought “real” photographers “shot” in grayscale. Arbus, Eugene Smith, Cartier-Bresson.

On those occasions when I’ve made color photographs, I have tended to stick with the subdued approach. And always  blue and blue tones. Cool colors.

So, for a change, I decided to go bold. To embrace RED.

What I want from this exercise is to push out of my comfort zone. To go farther. I can always go back to my cool colors; I probably will at some point. But trying something new, changing things up a bit, is how I’ll get myself to the next level.

I am working on my first semester studio project for my MFA in Photography. Talking it over with Charlotte, my mentor, we both got excited about the idea of exploring the sensuality of aging. The key is the sensuality.

Sensuality is defined as:

“…the enjoyment, expression, or pursuit of physical, especially sexual, pleasure.”

I’m looking to reject the idea of the dried out old prune, the spinster, the invisible woman, the has-been, and explore the juiciness, the passion, the confidence of the older woman.

My decision to take the leap and go for red is part of the daring to go bold in vision and in execution.

I have no idea what I will find. But it’s gonna be bright.

  1. This is exciting and inspiring, Amy— and I love the juicy rich red in this image. It landed in a big way when I saw it! I am excited to witness this new adventure as you step in with gusto. Thank you for sharing it.
